Preserving Your Flower Bouquets

Preserving Your Flower Bouquets

Flowers are beautiful gift to give to your loved one, but what happens when they begin to wilt and become unsightly? Most people don’t know how to care for flowers once they have them which is the key reason why most bouquets end up dying on a dining room table until they are ultimately thrown away. Of course, the beautiful bouquet you received won’t last forever but, there are a few steps you can take to keep them fresher longer and looking their absolute best.

One of the most important things to remember when you receive a bouquet of flowers is to care for them. Yes, they are pretty, but they do require a bit of attention to maintain that beauty.Preserving Your Flower Bouquets

Most bouquets come with flower food, don’t neglect this small package.

If your bouquet came with flower food, read the instructions carefully and do as it says.

The next thing you should do when you receive a bouquet of flowers is to trim the ends.

By cutting the stems you allow the flower to soak up the maximum amount of water which will keep the flowers hydrated and healthy. It’s best to cut off about one inch and to cut them at an angle for maximum water intake.

It is also important to change the water frequently (every 2-3 days) to decrease the build-up of bacteria.

Lastly, you can refrigerate your flowers at night to maximize freshness.

Refrigerating flowers at 34-36 degrees Fahrenheit helps to slow their metabolism rate and stop them from wilting.

With these simple tips, you can get the most out of your bouquets by extending their lifetime.

Why You Should Talk to Your Plants

Why You Shoul Talk to You Plants

Just like any living creature, plants need “food” and water to survive, but these complex living organisms thrive with the help of other elements like sunlight, compost, and… a good talking-to?

Many horticulturalists believe that talking to your plants can result in better growth cycles. According to a study conducted by MythBusters, plants that were exposed to recorded soundtracks performed better and grew faster than plants that were grown in a silent environment. In this experiment, MythBusters used three different control groups. One group was exposed to recordings of pleasant, loving praise. Another group was exposed to recordings of cruel insults and the last group was completely silent. Both the positive and negative recordings plant groups performed about the same-although we don’t recommend hurling insults at your Dumb Cane Plant– it can be concluded that plants respond to the vibrations of sound, not necessarily the context of speech. Why You Should Talk to Your Plants

Although plants don’t have nerve cells like humans, scientists have proven that plants have neurotransmitters that produce dopamine and serotonin.

In another study conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society, 10 plants were exposed to recordings of both men and women. Researchers believe that the plants would respond better to the male voice but, after a month the plants that had been attached to the female voices grew an average of an inch taller than those exposed to the male voice.

Talking to your plant also helps establish a relationship and will help you remember to routinely water and ensure that it receives adequate sunlight.

There are many benefits to having a plant in your home which includes air purifying, reducing stress, and reducing background noise. If you are interested in adding a new plant to your home, consider Coles Flowers in Middlebury, VT. Cole’s Flowers provides professional service and high-quality floral items. Choosing A Plant for Your Office

According to the US National Library of Medicine patients in hospital rooms with plants had significantly more positive physiologic responses, less pain, anxiety, and fatigue than patients without plants in their room.  Because of the many benefits, plants have, especially stress relief, keeping a plant on your desk or in your office can significantly improve your work environment. This is a necessity in high-pressure work environments. If you have an office plant or are considering getting one it is important to understand how to take care of it.How to Care for Your Office Plant

The plant takes care of you, so don’t neglect it. Be sure to thoroughly read the care card that comes with your plant because it will tell you exactly what it will need to survive. Remember that just because you like a certain plant doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work best in your workspace.

Here are some things you should consider before purchasing a plant for your office:

  • Lighting- Do you work in an office that doesn’t get much sunlight? If this is the case, consider a plant that doesn’t need a lot of sunlight like a cast iron plant or dracaena.
  • Space- Depending on your workspace you may not have a lot of room for a full-size Dragon Tree. Small plants can still be very beneficial. If you don’t have a lot of room to work with, a succulent is great for a small area.
  • Watering- Since this plant will live most of its life at your job, don’t get a plant that requires a lot of watering. You may get busy and forget or go on vacation and leave it for a week. If you can’t water your plant often consider getting a plant that can thrive in drier soil like a cactus.

If you are looking for a plant to put in your office visit, consider a Peace Lily from Cole’s Flowers. Peace Lilies are great plants for your office and home. They also help to cleanse the air of toxins and require minimal care.

Flowers to Give on Easter

Easter Flowers

Whether you’re going to be celebrating Easter at your house this spring or going to someone else’s home to celebrate the occasion, you should consider picking up flowers first. Flowers are a great way to decorate your home on Easter or to thank someone for inviting you over for the holiday. There are all kinds of flowers that would be perfect for Easter, too. Check out a few of your options below.

Lilies

If you want to put together a traditional Easter bouquet, you can’t go wrong with lilies. White lilies are probably the most popular type of Easter flower today. They’re representative of the hope and love that people feel in the days leading up to the Easter celebration. You can also switch things up and go with yellow lilies if you want to add a pop of color on Easter.

Tulips

Easter marks the unofficial start of spring for some people. And there aren’t any flowers that represent the start of spring quite like tulips do. When they start popping up out of the ground, it feels like springtime outside. You can give people that feeling by arranging tulips in your home or giving tulips away to someone special.

Daffodils

Much like with tulips, the sight of daffodils is one of the signs that spring has sprung. You can work them into a larger bouquet of flowers to add some color or group a bunch of them together as a gift on Easter. Daffodils are referred to as “Easter bells” in some cultures and are indicative of just how important the Easter season truly is.

Looking for the right flowers to give to someone on Easter? Cole’s Flowers has plenty of spring flowers that would work well. Call us at 802-388-4003 today to order a bouquet for yourself or for someone else.

Reasons to Surprise a Loved One With Flowers

Posted: March 28th, 2019
Just Because Flowers

Buying flowers for a loved one on Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or another holiday is nice. However, there’s a good chance that they won’t be all that surprised by them. If you really want to surprise a person, consider sending them flowers on a random Tuesday instead. They’ll be blown away by your thoughtfulness and will appreciate the gesture. Check out a few reasons why surprising a loved one with flowers is such a great idea.

It shows how much you care about them.

You might tell your spouse, your parent, or your sibling that you love them all the time. But every now and then, it’s important to show them through your actions instead of your words. Sending flowers is one of the best ways to show how much you care about another person. They’ll feel the love when they see flowers show up at their front door or their office.

It makes them feel better about themselves.

Have you noticed that someone in your life seems sad or stressed out lately? They could probably use a pick-me-up at the moment. Flowers will fill that role and help the person feel better than they did before. Flowers won’t erase whatever is bothering them at the moment. Nevertheless, the gesture will show them that they’re not alone. It’ll mean the world to them.

It gives them something to display in their home.

Flowers are a gift that will keep on giving for days and even weeks to come in some cases. When you send someone flowers, they’ll be able to display them in their home and look at them every time they walk by them. They’ll constantly be reminded of how sweet you were to send the flowers and love the way they look in their foyer, kitchen, or dining room.

Would you like to pick out the perfect bouquet of flowers for a loved one? Cole’s Flowers has flowers that are great for almost any occasion. Call us at 802-388-4003 today to order flowers for your loved one.
